Folks,

For those of you who aren't aware, the Iditarod dog sled race kicks off this weekend. 1,150 miles from Anchorage to Nome across some of the toughest wilderness on earth, with minimal support or safety available for the mushers (although there are extraordinary safety measures to protect the dogs).

If you're not into sledding, it's still worth following just for the bushy experiences as mushers are forced to deal with some very difficult situations. At the recent Yukon Quest race, sled after sled ploughed into 3ft deep 'overflow' where a river had broken through its own ice, and snow had fallen on top, creating a sub-zero slush puppy on top. Scary stuff. And much more fun than watching Formula 1 :D

I have followed this for the last couple of years, it is indeed fantastic viewing with allsorts entering what probably is one of if the hardest races on the planet, where both mental and physical strength is tested to breaking point and beyond for some of the competitors.

These guys show a strength and determination which most but the select few can only achieve.

The landscape and scenery is spectactular with them traversing some of the most barren and inhospitapal land the region can throw at them.

Fantastic viewing and well worth your time to follow it.
