Whats the best way to identify fallen timber?

There has been a lot of pruning going on in my local forest and there are piles of wood everywhere!! i wanted to see if i could get a walking stick out of it but am unsure how to identify which wood is which.

Anyone got any hints or tips

Thanks
Dave

Wood for walking sticks is normally straight and about 1" upwards in diameter! It's normally from pale to dark brown and reasonably dry.

Seriously, any wood should do provided its strong enough for you and has not started to decay.

I walked right into that one lol

Learn to ID bark and it should be easy enough to ID fallen wood!

Any good sources for this that you can share?
