The family and I went on a great walk today from Burnsall, round Trollers Gill and back to Appletreewick. Gorgeous weather and and an amazing sunset topped it off.
Legend has it that this narrow limestone gorge is the haunt of the "Barquest" or "Barguest" - the terrifying spectral hound of Craven (which is said to have "eyes as big as saucers", and which may have even given part of the inspiration for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes story "The Hound of the Baskervilles"). Setting off - perfect setting for a place in the country!
Looks like they were burning off the heather from the moor.
About to head in to Trollers Gill
Entrance to a disused mine
There was an eerie drip drip drip echoing out of the mine entrance
The temperature dropped by several degrees in the gill
No sign of the Barghest - although I wouldn't like to walk up here alone at night!
The river, which had been at the top of the gill reappeared at the bottom of the valley.
A serious bit of stone walling!
An old sluce gate, long since abandoned.
Simon's seat.
I love old tracks like this
"To Pateley Bridge"
A change of scenery heading towards Appletreewick
And that sunset.
A grand day out!
