How to tame your beard??

I know lots of us bushcrafter's have the obligatory beard but was wandering how do you get it to grow long but not too bushy since want to put a Viking plat in mine eventually but unless I wrap it in elastic bands it just looks messy.

I trim it once a week and every other month do a full shave. Reason being is that the stubble and bristles cause itching which flares up eczema if I scratch too much. I've used beard oil which helped but I am happy with my method.

For length growth you have to go through the scraggy phase unfortunately so be prepared to look like a hobo for a while
