Winston,

Generally, I sharpen as a knife on a large bench stone. To get an even bevel, try attaching a couple of "bulldog clips" to the spine of the Machete (this will hold the bevel at a more or less constant angle). I find kevlar gloves help as I use two hands to support the "fore and aft" axis of the machete as I can't do the whole blade edge even using a large stone and an arc sweeping motion

I haven't sharpened many but I'd put a convex edge on with a mouse pad and wet%dry paper, with a big knife you can use the whole area of the mousepad so it's like having a huge stone. For touch ups I'd how the knife still and move the stone (well wet&dry wrapped round a small spice pot).
