How is it made?

can it be used to lift, say, 5 tons?

This is for a living history friend.

(sorry for being so brief; in Cornwall doing research for Coursework)

Yes, depending on how thickly and soundly it is made. It was used in Treehenge, and in some of the reconstructions.
You need long, two year old, stems. They're just twisted and plyed. I'm told that they can be plaited too though.

First years are too soft, third years are too brittle and the bark's flakey.
