We're very lucky to have such great access to the countryside in Scotland. With this right comes the responsibility to have consideration for other people, especially those who earn their living from the land. Deer stalking is a very important activity from August to October, so if you're heading to the hills around this time, it's good to be able to plan around any stalking operations. This is where the Hillphones service comes in.

Hillphones is a recorded telephone message service which gives information about stag stalking activity in upland areas of Scotland. The service is to help hillwalkers find out where stag stalking is taking place and to plan their routes to avoid stalking operations. Messages are updated daily, and forecasts are given for a few days ahead wherever possible. Calls are charged at normal rates.

The Hillphone service is supported by the Access Forum, and has been organised by the Mountaineering Council of Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage and the participating estates. The service aims to improve communication between stag stalkers and hillwalkers.
