Hi guys sorry if this question has been covered already

I'm guessing that the steel of your puukko is not hard enough to cast a spark. I have an Isakki puukko as well and cannot get decent sparks with it, despite filing the back square. My opinels, on the other hand, all produce great showers of sparks. :) Broken galss, and broken pottery work well also!
Hope this helps,
Doug.

Does the back of the blade on which you strike the firesteel have a good, cleanly defined square shape? If not, you may have to break out the metal file and create one. This might help make your trickle of sparks into more of a shower.

As Tiley says......
I have a stainless Lapp Puukko and when new the top of the blade was quite rounded, so I put it in a vice and squared off the back edge with a file. It is now much better with a fire steel....
