help please.......sycamore & cherry

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I like my spoons, bowls, etc.to have some character therefore cherry has to be my fave wood for carving at the mo.I've been using sections from the same fallen tree in my local woods for the past 3 yrs.Yes, it is harder to carve than some other woods but I find the finish & end result very pleasing.Hawthorn is also an excellent choice because of some interesting grain & colour you can find.I think that a little 'twist' in the spoon just adds to the character-why fight it?We're not trying to produce a'factory finish' spoon after all.I've been giving my twisty spoons away as 'left' or 'right-handed' depending on the spiral.
