Hi all,

toally new to this and have been looking at all these fantastic pictures of spoons and kuksas and am keen to give it a try this winter.

I have a few questions -

1) Is there any How to posts for carving either spoons or kuksas ?

2) what tools do I need to get started ?

3) Any recommendations for budget tools (where to buy) ?

Many Thanks in advance and thanks for the insperational photos.

Hi DrDoug,

There are some skilled spoon carvers on this forum, and I expect some of them will answer soon, but in the meantime have a look on youtube for spoon carving videos by Robin Wood, who is a member here. They are a great introduction on how to carve.
Frosts spoon carving knives can be bought for around a tenner from Axminster Power Tool Centre.
Hope this helps :)

we did this series of videos of carving spoons, hope to do a kuksa one soon but they take a while and Nicola is pretty busy with work projects.

Tools for the straight knife I recommend frosts 106 sloyd at about £10 it is fantastic value. Hooks are not so easy have a look at this thread http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29840&highlight=hook

since then we have added several more hooks to our collection but I am still not really happy giving a wholehearted recommendation for any. The tight curve frost is the one to get if you are on a budget, again £10ish.
