OK, I know you're all desperate to know :) - some pretty good guesses though. Like Nice65 I thought what looks like a the head looked incredibly Dougal like :)

Please excuse the photos, I only had my phone to hand.

It's 'The Drinker' (Euthrix potatoria)

It looks like it is walking on a thin sprinkling of snow... What is the surface, really?

The photo really doesn't do the surface justice; I haven't found a way of photographing it effectively - probably long exposure on a tripod :)

It's Brazilian Gneiss, about 30mm thick and covers all the surfaces in our kitchen. It's an incredible stone and we selected the two 3m x 2m slabs needed from a warehouse near Dudley. It's almost like glass with crystals inside it; you can see below the polished surface like looking into a fluid.

Sorry, more info than you wanted :)

Again, the photos don't do it justice.

Not at all! It just so happens that SWMBO and I have been thinking for a while about replacing the crappy, scratch-prone synthetic black IKEA counter tops in our kitchen for a while.

I used to know a geology lecturer in New Jersey (a friend of a friend).

When he met the woman who was to become his girlfriend and then wife, his opening line was "oh, gneiss earrings!" She is also a geologist.

Yep, married to a geologist every road trip becomes a 'look at those folds' or 'look at that exposure' or other such geologist exclamations. Most people would call the kitchen surface a 'granite' but not my missus. She thought she was in heaven going around the warehouse :)
