Even though I feel a bit of a tit and look like one too
That is a really cool looking hat. Outback style hats are the best.

I feel a bit self-conscious wearing mine too which is why I mostly wear it in the countryside where I tend to only meet people I know. That said everyone who has seen it has voluntarily commented that they really liked it.

IMHO you cannot beat a Tilley hat - well the older canvas ones at least.
On your suggestion I have just bought my first Tilley hat, the T3 Wanderer. First impressions are good. It seems to be well made and it really suits me. It is already one of my favorite hats. I expect it will get a lot of use and should last for many years to come. Thanks for your suggestion.

(That's not me in the photo, it's just some random model on the Tilley website. I am considerably older, uglier, greyer and hairier then that handsome young chap. :D)

I think I'm getting old, I've watched videos on adjusting hat to size after realising my cotton fedora is a little large, hat sizing foam did trick.

I also like the poet fedora (Herbert Johnson out of my price range) and a medium brim or larger.
Indiana Jones streets of Cairo Hat
Advintage nice too.

Think I will have to try on a few more as it seems these types of hats are like shoes and one size doesn't fit all

Bought an Outback Hat the bottom one, two coats of Beeswax leather saddle treatment and it has stopped me getting wet, stopped me getting burnt and even sawdust from a roofing job in my hair cost me £15 for a real leather hand made hat and loving it.

In some ways looking like a tit is better than bad sunburn and even skin cancer if your hair style has less opportunity for styling than in your youth shal we say (diplomatically way of putting it for a very low follicle count).

I do not have that comfidence so whilst I have a Tilly TMO5 airflow and a Tarp hat, both fairly or very wide brim I do tend to wear a cheap nike cap more. Cooler than the tarp hat. I do worry about the tips of my ears though. In the hills Ido not care but I do more walking with the dog in the village I live so a cap suits me better for looks not function. Caps also do not offer that much protection for your eyes. A wide brimmed extends the shade to the side but a cap does not so you get side sunlight into the eyes more.

Yeah, I have a Wanderer, the regular Tilly’s look too posh on me. It’s a good few years old and getting a very worn in look. I don’t mind a bit of fraying and creasing, or that it’s not going to last a lifetime.

I have one of the Amazonas Tarp hats that’s probably around 15 - 20 years old and been in the sea and many swimming pools over the years. The tyre wire round the brim is rusty, the grommets are rusty, but it’s still going strong. Prefer the smaller brimmed T3 though and happy to scrunch it up and stuff it in a pocket.

Top tip with the Tilleys. Don’t put £20 in the pocket until you’re well used to having a hat with you or you can stop for a glug of water at the top of a 5 mile bicycle hill climb and coast back down again with the wind in your hair. Then realise the wind is in your hair because your hat is still at the top of the hill 5 miles back up. Do you cycle back, or write it off? @AndyH will tell you, he wasn’t going back for it :D

I have a canvas-ish cotton baseball cap for work unless it’s proper sunny ( in the Lakes? ) when I wear a squishable Panama straw fedora style hat from Ecuador. It came from a friend as a gift many years ago & is perfect as a stylish sunblock.

I have various hats.

My favourite hat for summer is a Kakadu Traders Leather Australian bush hat.

Leather is great. It is well worn in and stretched to fit snugly. It stays on in a breeze. It obviously keeps the sun off.

It is comfortable even in hot weather when my head is sweating.

I treat it with periodically with neatsfoot oil.

The brim can be easily re-shaped with steam from a kettle.

I don't mind looking like a tit and, when I wear it, I probably look less of one as a result of not feeling self-conscious.
