Hammock Hanging with one Tree

Has anyone done it?

We went out last weekend and its going to be a regular spot for us, but the only downfall is.... lack of hammocking tree's, there are tree lines, but none suitable (without hacking vegetation away) to hang from.

So i was thinking of something along the lines of x2 pieces of 3"x2" timber, 4-5' long, coach bolted together at the top with some D shackle's attached, then placed in an upside down V configuration and then using two heavy duty dog tethers to anchor it on the opposite side?

I thought about this, but i'd have to fabricate a triple hinge to accomidate the x3 pieces of timber, if i tie off the x2 peices to the ground with heavy duty dog teathers, do you not think it would be secure enough?

Good idea, i'll make sure i put an air mat underneath for any gravity induced falls haha

I use three old army tent poles lashed together and lay out a series of pegs (metal and wood) as ground anchors.

You can do it but it is a faff.

it works, my old garden setup was exactly that, but a pair of legs at both ends as i had no suitable trees.

Have a look on hammock forums for 'boom stakes'

They have much more holding power then normal stake setups due to the way the force is distributed in the ground, it what they use for marquee guys and dead easy to fabricate with a drill and some metal tube.

Those wouldn't do the job i dont think. I used the next size up. The boom stakes are apossible idea. I have used the nylon delta tent pegs and the hold a lot of force. The 200mm steel one - 2 to an end could work. http://www.deltagroundanchors.co.uk/home/a5_products

I've used the yellow plastic version and they are excellent. Main problem is that the shape means that a bag of them takes up a lot of space

I think if you're carrying a large wooden tree substitute then that is probably a minor issue...

The thing about a hammock is there is a lot of tension in the cord. So, you must either anchor it very well, or you're in trouble. Now, how about arranging for a beam to sit between 2 tripods. No tree required. You suspend your hammock from the 2 ends of the beam.

I saw a guy on a campsite in the Ardeche using the same setup as Bard, he had scaff poles though and the biggest pegs I've seen in my life.

if you had a big enough tree you could tie off to the trunk and then a large branch going out from there on the other end, if needed you could tie a Y shaped stick to the line and then branch to push the hammock down straight...

I was thinking more that people might buy some of these pegs for 'normal' use (like I did) and if so they need to be aware of this space disadvantage in case they hadn't thought of it (which I hadn't).

The pegs are good - I have used ordinary straight plastic ones and they have tended to break. With these I often kicked them in with my heel, or bashed them with a (metal) hammer and have had no problems
