i don't want to use a rope to hang my hammock because of possible tree damage, and i'vee been looking at a hanging strap system - does anyone know of any uk suppliers of straps - nothing fancy - i got the hammock in a swop, and don't want to spend a fortune on straps. i'd make my own, but i don't have access to a sewing machine
thanks

I use Climbing tape slings for all my hammocks (My wife n the kids all have them now!) Tiso's the climbing shop they had tape slings in the climbing rope dept for only around £5 (at half price) each. they were about 2 meters long. I use purlon rope (£3 a hank or so) to extend from the tapes if I need to depending on how far apart the trees are (I've used trees very far apart occassionally).

Hope this helps.

Gorilla,
Making your own need not involve a sewing machine.
You can buy strong webbing at any sewing type shop or DIY store, in a range of colours and widths to suit whatever you want. I bought black 2" as that was what was in the shop at the time. Something in the order of 5 meters for each end of the hammock. Simple tie a "figure eight loop in one end of each and use a lighter to seal the other end to stop it fraying. I also do not bother with complicated knots, prefering instead to use this system - http://www.imrisk.com/hammock/improvedknot.htm -

Any more questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Have a look in a climbing handbook for a good disciption of a Figure of 8 knot, very easy to do when learnt and will never come undone by accident, hence better than a bowline in my view :)

I found a bright orange ratchet strap on the way home this morning. It's the same colour as the orange bits on the hammock. Coordinated straps! You can pick up those straps in Lidls and similar shops for next to nothing. Keep your eyes peeled for a bargain!
