Illegal logging is at an all time high in Greece due to high heating oil prices. It's not just illegally sourced wood that's getting burned though, so much waste is being burned that Greece now has a toxic smog problem. I can see the same happening in the UK a few years down the line...

...the slopes of Mount Olympus leads through lush, fertile forest. But the vegetation is dotted with bare patches - precious trees ripped away...

Quite a few areas have been deliberately "accidentally" burnt to get round their equivalent of green-belt laws. Quite sad to drive through the hills a year or so ago and see the bare patches where house-building was going on.
