Took the day off work to take my nearly seven year old hunting for fossils at Mappleton near Hornsea.

I'd never been before so was a little worried that we may come back empty handed.

We timed the tide wrong but initially scored some sponges and devils toenails (Jurassic oysters) followed by a nice little belemnite and chrinoid concretions. But then things slowed and I didn't want to get cut off by the tide so we turned North to the sandy beach which didn't look as promising.

We combed the high tide mark for ages when we spotted something suspiciously round.

I took to it with hammer and chisel and it's prehistoric secret was revealed...

Some nice pyrite crystallisation too.

Very happy boy and great day out
