Wood is essential… and lignin also… but not for everyone!

Genetically modified organism

A tobacco plant which has been genetically engineered to express a gene taken from fireflies.A genetically modified organism (GMO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using techniques in genetics generally known as recombinant DNA technology. Recombinant DNA technology is the ability to combine DNA molecules from different sources into the one molecule in a test tube. Thus, the abilities or the phenotype of the organism, or the proteins it produces, can be altered through the modification of its genes.

The term generally does not cover organisms whose genetic makeup has been altered by conventional cross breeding or by "mutagenesis" breeding, as these methods predate the discovery of the recombinant DNA techniques. Technically speaking, however, such techniques are, by definition, genetic modification.

Examples of GMOs are diverse, and include transgenic experimental animals such as mice, several fish species, transgenic plants, or various microscopic organisms altered for the purposes of genetic research or for the production of pharmaceuticals. The term "genetically modified organism" does not necessarily imply, but does include, transgenic substitution of genes from another species, and research is actively being conducted in this field. For example, genes for fluorescent proteins can be co-expressed with complex proteins in cultured cells to facilitate study by biologists, and modified organisms are used in researching the mechanisms of cancer and other diseases.

I didn't understand any of that, but if you cross a firefly with a tobacco plant, does that mean cigarettes will be self lighting ????..............

Nice one JP.

Foul, I am another who is a bit confused by the content of mosts of your postings.

I am sure that we would like to help , if the navigation and usage of the facilitys here, are proving to be a problem for you. Or is it made worse, by a bit of a language problem?

Come on, fellow, we will try to help.

hello everyone

was just to explain was is GMO, tobbaco plants was just un exemple.

now it is a bushcraft community in here

we have to deal with wood right?

For a few years the paper industrialists have begun research to modify wood genetically, by creating OGM-wood, or trees-GM (MGA) low in lignin! Genetic tests of modifications are in hand in France, on the poplar and the larch, the birch in Finland, and others still elsewhere. These tests are carried out in France by organizations of research financed with public funds (the INRA in particular). One speaks about it much less than about the GMO agricultural, but the result is perhaps more serious still, because it is about a radical transformation intended to produce a material which one atrophies part of the noblest properties to the profit of the only paper industry. Holding of this genetic modification of wood advance, one will see it, of the ecological arguments…, because the manufacture of certain paper pulp is very polluting. Tomorrow genetically modified trees, low in lignin will be perhaps present on forest pieces. These trees will be of course, unsuitable with a use out of sawlog. They will have only one paper use. It will be said to us, of course, that these seedlings are sterile, that there is no danger of dissemination, etc… but one knows it “the human east error”….
