Giving Colour to leather

I have a steadily growing collection of leather worked items that I have made from vegetable tanned leather. Thing is, currently they are all pink. I would like to add a little bit of colour to them, but am not sure what method to use. I have some green vitriol that I could mix with water and use to give them a blackish colouring. I also have the usual supply of vegetable oils (Walnut, Olive, Sunflower) and some beeswax.

Can anyone recommend methods of adding a bit of colour to veg tanned leather, ideally without resorting to proprietary dies? I would rather a dark brown, than a black?

Thanks

J
