First you need to decide what type of runes you want to use (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runes#Runic_alphabets). The elder futhark has a larger character set, so it is easier to transcribe into modern western European languages. Are you looking at using them semi-frequently, or just for a one-time project?
Aye there are various runic alphabets from different time periods and regions. I use Futhark the most as it is the more generic that people identify with. I have a rune punch set from leprevo but the translations on the back are wrong (at least to my knowledge). Here is a basic wee guide. Remember it was an alphabet for the scandinavian/germanic tongue so W and V are the same, and C and K are the same. Some symbols represent a single sound that we create with a combination of two letters.
This book is great for beginners, it teaches the history of runes, how to use them, how to write them, how to read them...+ its really cheap i got it for 6quid (used)
