Seen a few of these about, quite large, about 4 or 5 inches in diameter and 6 inches high, slight mushroomy smell, but are they edible??

No, didn't eat any as I'm not sure what they were either, i thought some sort of parasol, but I'm not sure...
I wouldn't say it were parasol, no dimple in the middle and the flakes look like they are the remains of the veil. I am no expert, but I can't see a detatched ring underneath. Gills are white and free, cannot see the base but it appears to be swelling towards the bottom so could be bulbous. I'd guess at one of the Amanitas, but i wouldn't eat it anyway due to the fact that I cannot ID them 100 per cent. You need the Mushroom Lady to help you trhere!

Amanita keeps-changing-its-name
I am not that sure on the ID it maybe amanita gemmata as that has a variant that loses its ring. Amanitas can lose some of thier features in heavy rain, the vail remnants (dots on cap) can be washed off, the ring can disapear.

Been going thru the guides and online and it looks very very like Amanita Ceciliae, (is that a UK variety?) looked at quite a few and none have rings, but I definitely think you're right with an aminita and it's suspect at best!, so thanks for that!
