On July 15, 1923, in Nenana, President Warren G. Harding, who traveled to Alaska to mark the completion of the Alaska Railroad, drove a golden spike into the rails, distinguishing the official completion of the roughly 20-year construction project extending the railroad from Seward north to Fairbanks. The Alaska Railroad is celebrating its 90th birthday throughout 2013 by offering all passengers born in 1923 unlimited free passage on the railroad in 2013, among other events.
