This website lists places in the UK where fishing is free of charge:

Can't vouch for the accuracy, but it looks well researched.

Free fishing varies from salmon fishing in west country rivers to coarse fishing 'for 1km downstream of the sewage works'

In England you still need a rod licence of course.

Hi there
Not sure of accuracy either but as most of it is river it's probably ok. Not exactly free though as you have to buy a rod licence which will cost you £27 for up to 2 rods for coarse fish or £72 for trout & salmon. Most UK rivers have public stretches open to just the rod licence. You get things like the Norfolk Broads also. Otherwise virtually all the fishing in the UK is privately run, so you pay per day or per year plus the rod licence.
cheers

Thanks for that info, and also for the rod licence costs.

I am in Scotland where rod licences are not required - a good thing for folks like me who fish only a few times a year.

Trout fishing in Scotland is pretty cheap £5 to £10 for a day ticket. My season ticket for Loch Earn costs me £28, which I think is good value for what you get.
