I think exploding chestnuts do smell like potato when done in the oven
I've roasted hazelnuts in their shells, in the hot ashes of a fire. They didn't 'pop', they did kind of steam though.
These were pretty fresh ones that I roasted, no idea how the dried shop bought ones might react.
Be careful would probably be the best advice
