On a trip to the Cairngorms this weekend I picked up Horses Hoof Fungus which is now drying in my greenhouse. It's a small one, about 4.5 by 3 by 2.5 inches, but a decent example of the species. I thought it might be nice for somebody who can't get hold of them to have a shot of it. It wont provide a lot of amadou, but it should have enough for a play with.

First person to reply to this thread can have it, I'll pay postage. I'll post it on Friday by which time it will be dry, as I don't want to post it while it's still liable to rot.

Cheers Ogri, I'm suprised no one has snapped it up yet. I've seen a few threads where people are looking for these things but unable to find them.

Go on then I'm stumped, what do you use it for?

Zammo,
you peel the hard outer layer off, and collect the velvet layer between the shell and the spore tubes - when prepared in a variety of ways it becomes excellent tinder - Horses Hoof Fungus also known as False Tinder Fungus (IIRC) some say its second only to Innonotus Obliquus - True Tinder Fungus or Chaga. Both types grow on mature Birch trees in the northern/colder regions.
