Have you tried seeing how much weight one ping pong will keep afloat?

I did a few experiments years ago and gave up, anything more than one door key and it sunk!

Maybe use a cord that floats? paracord [nylon] specific gravity = 1.14. Water [fresh] = 1. if it needs to float a lower number is better, Dyneema = .98, Polypropylene = .91.

Not sure if Dyneema or a thin Polypropylene is as suitable to make a float with though. [Polypropylene degrades more in UV]

[Cotton = 1.54]
