Hi everyone,

My son wants a flint & steel (after seeing them on Minecraft) so I may as well get a good functioning one. Any recommendations?

Thank you.

Real flint and steel or a ferrorod?
The latter will be much easier to use and can get them in many outdoor shops or online. They’re all much of a muchness though personally I’d get one that isn’t too thin.
Then you’ll need some tinder - cottonwool makeup pads and Vaseline good place to start.

There’s loads of info on how to use -

He won’t - not with a flint and steel.

He’s going to have to have patience.
Are you happy with the system yourself? I find it’s the transfer that’s harder than the ember.

I gave two six year old Grandsons ferro rods and scrapers when we camped in the spring. They used those well (They objected to them being stored with the camp kit after we got home)

The best of luck. I hope it works out.

Thanks Pattree, to be totally honest, I'm getting one because my son wanted one after seeing them on Minecraft. It's actually better if he can't create a spark :lmao:

I think I was about 8 when I got caught playing with matches.

With a good steel, decent bit of flint with a good edge and home made charcloth I've found flint and steel quite easy to catch a spark.

I would advice eye protection, just in case.

For sure. I have to work hard to get that glowing char-cloth to ignite tinder.

To the extent that the only fire starter that I use now whether home or outdoors is a big fat 90x12mm ferro.
I’ve worn half way through one end over the years. Not about to turn it round yet. It will see me out.

On the other hand the flint and steel is a lovely illustration of the history of fire. It will teach a child that life wasn’t quite straight forward and that simple daily skills had to be learned where today we have gadgets.

Has anyone made anything like a modern version of a flintlock and frizzen pan tinder box?
