Fjallraven have changed their sizings slightly in the last couple of years since I bought my Vidda Pros, and as I’ve misplaced my gut I needed some smaller ones.

Previously the leg length just scaled up with the waist size in a rather peculiar manner, there was no consistent Short, Regular or Long sizing for them.

Now, however, they are selling what they call ‘Improved fit’. These come in Short (30”), Regular (32”) and Long (34”). The waist sizing has also changed slightly.

For the Vidda Pros I read that the recommendation is that you size up a waist size, and that the inseam runs slightly longer than expected according to some. I followed this advice.

My normal trouser size is 32-34” waist and 34” inseam. I bought 36” waist (EU size 52) and 32” leg (I was going to go 34” leg but they were out of stock everywhere). These actually seem to fit pretty well - I reckon an inseam of 33” would be perfect for me (I am 6’3”) but I could probably get away with the 34” leg as well, with boots on. I do agree they run slightly longer than expected, as 32” inseam would usually be definitely too short.

The reinforced knee placement is perfect when kneeling in the 32” leg as well. In the previous version I felt that they sat slightly too low, even though the overall leg length was fine. I wonder whether the 34” inseam would place the reinforced areas too low as well? If I can find a longer pair in a shop I’ll give that a go some time and report back.

It’s worth mentioning this fit has a slightly tapered lower leg compared with the previous version. I quite like this, as felt they were a bit too baggy previously.

They also run slightly tighter around the crotch and bum. The advice I saw was that you should try squatting and kneeling in them when you buy them, as you’re better off getting a larger waist size than you need if they’re feeling tight around the crotch/bum, given the material has no stretch. Easier to wear a belt/tailor in the waist than it is to adjust the other dimensions. I would agree with this - the 36” again does feel just about perfect around the crotch and derrière for me, so even if my waist was a bit smaller I am not sure the other dimensions would be so comfy.

Anyway, just thought I’d share in case it saves someone from having to go deep down the Fjallraven sizing rabbit hole, which is a truly dark and puzzling place.

Once you are happy with your leather work you should learn to sew and make your own garments - for that perfectly tailored fit and feature trousering :)

So after a morning out in the woods in these today, I think they will be fine but I would prefer an extra inch on the leg, as I did find them riding up over my boot when bending my legs too much (sat down on a low log for example). Not to the extreme, but slightly. Whilst I reckon these are slightly over the 32” stated, I don’t think they’re quite a ‘Long’, just a touch under.

I’ve ordered some ‘Long’ to see if they’re workable or if I’ll look like the Wacky Waving Inflatable Tube Man in them.

…annoyingly, the Long (34”) ones do fit better. Drat.

They’re less baggy than the older fit (better ratios for tall people) and the knee reinforcements are perfectly placed when kneeling.

So I suppose I shall be selling some ‘worn once’ Vidda Pros. That’ll teach me for being impatient.

The non-stretchy nature of G-1000 means I never wear the Vidda Pros anymore. I would definitely recommend the Ventilated variants, as the only difference is stretchy material in the crotch, and side vent zips. They are much more comfortable.

That said, I exclusively wear the Kebs now. These are so very comfortable it's like wearing bushcraft pajamas, and yet they are every bit as durable as the Vidda Pros in my experience. The stretchy material is, if anything, more durable than G-1000.

I have some Keb Agiles and they're super comfy and lightweight, perfect for summer. But I do love the Vidda Pros especially during the winter months, the lack of stretch hasn't caused me an issue with them sized correctly, I have to say. Fjallraven get a hard time for their prices, but the ones I just sold have years and years more of use in them. I suspect shopping second hand is the way to get around the Samuel Vimes 'Boots' Theory of Economic Unfairness, as buying new trousers for £150 isn't a luxury lots of people have. But if you can get a used pair that'll last another 10 years for £60, that's not too shabby at all.
