first proper project !

okay so tonight i thought i should make something out of the wood i got laying around just been cut and made this as my very first thing it is supposed to be for tapping when the rise is here but i need your help telling me if its any good for birch tapping its 8 inches long and 1 1/2 inch wide should i saw it in half or keep it, or is it useless for the job and chuck it, constructive feedback wanted !

That's way too big Mandos. You would need to drill a 1.5 inch hole into the tree. Just use the tip of your knife to pierce through the bark. There is a good vid on Natural Bushcraft on you tube, check that first. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RuLlECSPfM&list=UU0dYNYyWJZpBH431A7HSYIQ&index=96

i always thought cutting into the tree would damage it as your leaving it open and not plugging it after wards ?
