I have recently started building up my leathercraft kit have a go at attempt to make my own stuff.

I know have a new appreciation for these guys and girls out there who put out these beautiful pieces of leather work, getting to such a level must take months and months of practice.

I have bought most of my tools cheap from eBay and had some advice on what I would need, the rest has been watching YouTube to learn.

So the first thing I was told to do was start making bits from card. So lots of time spent making templates.

Then started getting some hands on practice on some strips of leather, trying to get some of the groves, stitching burnishing etc

Last night I thought I would have a go making a axe mask for my GB SFA. I finally got around to ordering some dye so started simple and made a template from the existing sheath (made a small change in the curve) and cut it out in leather and dyed it.

Also glued in the welt using the on glue I had avaliable (gorilla glue)

It's not a great fit but it will do.

This morning I got on and used the stitch groove and put diamond stitch punch before heading to work.

Back home and I glued both sides together

This evening was spent doing a quick test stitch on a little loop for a lanyard

I don't have any large hole punches or studs and tools so plan on using some leather thong and leather toggle to act as a closur for now until I get what I need for the next one.

I made some mistakes, forgot to bevel the curved edge before burnishing, marked the leather with general clumsiness and when punching though the leather with the awl it went a bit wonky on the back.

But over all for my first attempt with tools for eBay I am hopeful for the future.

Really tidy work... like that a lot. Is this genuinely your first project? It looks so neat... very much looking forward to seeing the finished sheath.

Thanks, yes honestly first thing I have properly made, I started to make an axe loop but as the design wasn't right I just it as a technique practice

Thanks all, rather haply with my first attempt. Will finished with some leather tong as soon as I can.

Wow, so organized! It looks like you know exactly what you're doing, more like pictures for a proper tutorial :)

Thank Cory, I have spent a far bit of time watching instructional on YouTube and planned of lot of it in my head, I found if I broke each stage down it was less daunting.

Will get some more tools on payday and start again.

Cheers T.

Not messy at all... that looks neater than the first!

Not sure what its called, but a leather worker will probably come along and say... the stuff you polish it up with... you know what I mean... it just needs a polish up after stitching and it will look the business.

Very, very nice work!

Looking good mate!

I caught the bug years ago, dont get much time these days to get my gear out and have a play, might try and make some time for some leatherwork in the next couple of weeks i think!

Thanks for the inspiration pal

Just finished the axe mask I started the other week after the snaps and tools arrived.

Wasn't that easy fitting the the strap and snaps after the mask was sawn up but got there in the end.
