You can't beat a good first aid course. But to answer your question: First Aid Manual This is the one that the British Red Cross and the St Johns Ambulance use to teach.
A basic first aid course isn't expensive, your local red cross centre run them frequently.
As already discussed about undergoing appropriate first aid training but afterwards I think you could do no better than to purchase a copy of the Oxford Book of Expedition and Wilderness Medicine:
