These are absolutely beautiful. Is everyone buying lengths of
whatever metal is involved in the firesteels and then customising
them, or buying already-made firesteels and tweaking them?

The colour of the metals differs and I wondered if that's just the
photography or if all sorts of alloys can be used?

Whatever direction you want is fine. I bought a pair of plain rods and added the custom holder, though I understand that the plastic handle can be cut off if you want to change it. Thematerial is generally a similar colour (kinda gunmetal grey) when new and brighter, more silvery when used, though it tarnishes over a few days back to original.
There are plenty available from many different sources if you have a browse around.

Sorry for the delay but i've been in Canada. Now that I've won I have to say though I thought Stuart's was better than mine.
