I just tryed a rough glass paper and it worked great! I think i'd change it from 'very poor' to 'good' :-D. Swan vesta striker gives a poor spark though. Magnesium and aluminium don't work, nor does lexan. Iron pyrite works great. No suprise there.

Cool, I'll add em (apart from the wire brush cos it's a steel variant).

I think natural materials would be a good focus now, stuff you'd find in the wilds - I'm still curious about broken pebbles.

It depends what stone the pebble is. That Iron pyrite that I used was a broken pebble.

Couldn't get coal to work.
Glass works great.
Flint excellent, so it that chalky stuff that surrounds it!
Quartz excellent, as is marble.

with ref to the bricks.Depends on what brick you use,class A and B engineering bricks work the best as they have compressive strength of 70 newtons or more.Some softer stock bricks wear away before giving a spark.

The Brusletto laminated blade is the non stainless variety. Back of blade has a 90 degree edge, and it doesn't spark well. I roughened it with a file without much benefit.

Waiting for my WS Micarta to be delivered, so I'll probably not try to improve the Brusletto further.

Give me till this weekend to try the 12v battery thing...but I think I will stick to just solid brass wire with gasoline tinder

I noticed that this one was missed.
The good old bas.tard file (k???cross cut file???) . I always carry a cut off piece of file as a striker, some work better than others, but all work well.

Safty note: Files are also much safer than 12v bats and coper wire :twisted:
