I was watching some re-runs of some of bear grills exploits usually I'm horrified at some of the needless risks he takes (But in the pursuit of entertainment and with a safety crew off camera he can do these things) I was interested though when I saw him start a fire with a phone battery, I was amazed to see how volatile they are when punctured I think I got it right to put a link from youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gZ8FHEUCl8 usefull as a last resort if handled with care

So you have no fire steel, matches or lighter but you just happen to be carrying a knife. Grylls is also working on the basis that your phone is totally knackered an waterlogged, otherwise you are destroying your only hope of communication. Perhaps taping a disposable lighter to your phone would be a more practical solution :D

It was surprising to see the result of piercing the battery though.... Blimey!

That's the first useful thing I've learned from the guy.

I'm also told he's been dropped by his TV company because he refused to carry on making stupid reckless programs.

Maybe he's turned over a new leaf as he's realised that he needs to be a decent role model for the scouts. Time will tell.

I never really thought of the Lithium in phone batteries being the same stuff as used to be stored in our chem lab under oil in a jar. It is crazy stuff isn't it?
Maybe worth a warning to some members that this stuff is not set off by Oxygen as BG said but by the moisture in the air. If he had spilled water on it there would have been a BIG bang. All assuming that I remember my O level chemistry correctly. Please feel free to put me right.
I keep seeing old phone batteries on the street : might just pick one up for my kit next time instead of putting in the recycle bag.
Cheers , Simon
