There was a report on BBC Breakfast news this morning about Fungi with a chap from Kew Gardens. Very interesting, he told a story about the scientists buying a punnet from a high street store, analysing the DNA and finding two new strains of fungi!!
Upshot is, they are now looking more at fungi than at any other time as they are such an untapped recourse for medicine, ecology, science and even making handbags! (They showed one and it looked sturdy enough).

Wild champignons are so much tastier than the cultivated ones....

Yeah I've looked into growing mushrooms, the ones I've seen are inoculated dowels that you freeze then tap into a log with pre drilled holes. Ive got stacks of timber atm so would be nice to get something edible from them rather than just heat!
You can buy inoculated logs ( Asian funghi) and Truffle inoculated hazel bushes.
Also Champignon inoculated half rotted woodchips in bags.
