One of my friends was approached for the anna karenina film, his job was train others in the use of scythe and be an extra himself, didn't earn anything from it and treated rubbish.....

Going through an agency is often the only way that extras can make a living.
The agency takes a cut, but it's fair enough if they actually arrange for you to be paid.

I had no agent - just following newspaper ads - and was paid handsomly!
