I own a 12 inch dutch oven and I was curious about cooking times for a pork roast...I want to roast one and I have never done it before.
How many coals...top and bottom should I use ??? How long should I cook it for.
Would the same rule apply cooking a roast in a dutch oven as it would in the oven at home , so many minutes per pound ?

everything in the wild is going to be a guesstimate,

but i may be able to partially help with the temperature you'll need.

for the scientific answer get hold of a food /oven thermometer.

there are other ways of measuring temperature, though they are a little...how should i say this....unconventional. ;) and not reliable? ;)
the below info is based on an open fire or BBQ so only partly of use but you'll get the idea.

To judge the temperature of the coals, carefully hold your hand, palm side down, at cooking height. Hold your hand for as many seconds as is comfortable.
7-8 secs cool fire 150c
5-6 secs warm fire 160c
4-3 secs med fire 180c
1-2 secs hot fire 200c
Reduce the temperature by spreading the coals out; increase the temperature by making the coals deeper.

of course you will instantly see the problem,
everyone has a different tollerance to heat and pain, i can hold my hand in what i think is warm water :) my son will say it's too hot :aargh4: . (the above idea was found on a BBQ help website can't remember which).
