Fascinating. On a related tangent, it seems that Russian, Chinese and South American axes tend to not have polls. All the weight is forward of the handle.

Many thanks. Loved that. Looks like lovely wood to work. Clever idea of using dye plugs to guage depth of wood. I can see that even the experts get blisters doing this sort of work. Excellent.

Great vid, I loved the adze gouge and handed axe gouges and the cow munching on the chippings!

Niels: Poplar might well be suitable, I think they are of the same genus "Populus" and weigh in the same at 450kg/m3.
