Deer hoof preservation

I was out today on a wildlife walk and came across the remains of a Chinese water deer, the only salvageable bits are the lower legs. So I was wondering about using them for walking sticks. So I'm after advice as a novice how to treat and prepare them for use.

Stat by making absolutely certain that the metatarsal scent glands are gone. Like miles away.
Other than skunk, there little else that can stink up everything you own.
Freeze/thaw/freeze/thaw, just in case there are joint worms still alive.
