I think I've at last found the daysack I'm looking for, but someone was wearing it rather than it being in a shop :( What I'm after is a daysack that is short and wide, rather than tall and thin - rather like me really :lmao: I also want it to be of a 'quiet' material rather than modern synthetic.

The one I saw was the shape of an old-fashioned rucksack (no frame). The central section was a single square-shaped sack, with a pocket on each side. All three were fastened with belt-buckle style fixings. The material looked like th sort of material that the green 'satchels' were made of when I was at school - you know, the ones that normally had Motorhead or CND logos applied in biro :D It was a sort of very thick cotton-looking material.

The one I've seen came from Katz army surplus in Folkestone, but they have nothing like it on their website. So I'm after ideas.

I'll want to keep it as mainly a grab bag for day-bimbles, and to make sure I don't forget anything important when I go down the wood. It won't need to hold sleeping kit as I travel down there by car.

Help  :thanks:

Try Snugpak sleeka force 35, think thats correct. Draw cords on side pockets and main reducing noise one piece of velco on mesh pocket that rarely gets used waterproof cover in base, wide straps. Had mine about 3 years its had some stick wildfowling and stalking, machine washable so cleans up for holiday use.

Chainsaw: Yeah, I've been following those threads, but want something that is rucksack shaped. I doubt it'll fit round me as a bumbag :(

Pothunter: Just looked at that, ta. Seems a bit tall'n'thin, and looks like the material might be noisy, but both those statements are from the picture, so some personal info would be welcome.

PaganWolf: I'm struggling to find a picture. Can you provide a link, Ta.

I've found something that's pretty close in terms of size/style at the Hemp Store

Keep the ideas coming, I'm determined to find the right thing eventually!

Swedish army daysack in canvas with leather straps and metal buckles throughout. No external pockets, although there must be one available as I have seen it used in the film As fas as my feet will carry me. It cost twelve quid from Genuine Army Surplus, £6.99 for the sack the rest on P+P. It does come in a big box, hence te price of P+P, but they are nice bags with a strange sort of metal cross frame which doesn't touch your back as there is a crossed leather strap arrangement going on. It creaked a bit when i started out, but after I Nikwaxed the straps up for waterproofing and suppleness, the creaking stopped.

If anyone knows of a version with a large pocket on the rear and two side pockets, give me a shout!

Or how about

Thanks for those links Jared, that last one looks pretty much spot on. At that price even if it turns out to be not quite right I won't have lost much.

Cheers Spamel, I had thought of that, but my sewing skills only just about stretch to sewing a button back on:o

ganstey what your describing sounds like an ALICE pack, which is similar to the German one Jared posted:
