Dawn Owls

Was greeted this morning with owls calling near the house in the dawn gloaming, wonderful song. Beautiful frosty morning ... wish I could have been out last night, to wake in the hammock to hear the owls

I don't mind them I must say....its nightjars I can't abide...weird noise, used to keep me awake.

Hearing short eared owl for the first time outside the tent was a bit spooky

A fun one is barn owl, if you are with someone who doesn't know what the sound is. Tell them a horror story or so, about the creature rumoured to walk the woods, and then leave them to fail to sleep all night

Nightjars are also good for that sort of thing, especially when they do their wing clap displays. Freaked me out the first time I heard it.

I'm always surprised at how early the Tawny Owls begin their conversations in the lighter part of the year. In my wood they pipe up quite some time before dusk and then all goes quiet when they go out for supper, only to start again once darkness has fallen.
