I have a high opinion of the OS, interesting history and still best maps in the world.

And artistic too.

What I dont like is those stupid ones with the map on both sides.

How do you manage them? They only fold one way.

And you seldom have them fully unfolded.

Annoying, isn't it ?

Saves trying to footer about with 'which' map though when out on a hill and it's chucking it down.
Some of the weatherproof walker's maps are double sided.

I like maps, I had a lot of fun drawing maps, I could get totally lost for hours and hours in the Geology map room at the Uni

Whenever I get a new OS map I...
Remove the cover;
Refold it in half, half again, etc. (normally 4 folds in all); that way you can use both the original and the new folds so the map fits the map case with your area of interest viewable on one or both sides of the map case without needing to open, unfold, refold, and close the map itself on a windy and / or rainy day;
Highlight the Eastings in one colour and the Northings in another;
Highlight the 100KM Square Id;
Write the map number in felt pen in each corner of both sides of the map so I can generally get the one I want easily from the shelf;
Pencil in the Magnetic Variation on the part of the map I am going to use "today".

I also occasionally add a small Post-It note at a useful place if I need any additional notes, grid refs. etc. for the trip.

The work of a few minutes and makes the map easier to use, particularly so if you are using a GPS along with it either for navigation or planning waypoints for a route.

You appear to have missed the step where you exclaim a few choice words and then stuff it in your map pouch like you’re pocketing an empty crisp packet? This is all very unfamiliar.

I photocopy the bits I want for the trip on A4 sheets and put in map case.

I just invested, a few years ago, in Memory-Map when the OS 50K and 25K were on offer and print the bits I need for a walk or trip. I have the whole of the UK at both scales and can zoom in and study to my heart's content (I love maps).
