I’m getting back into carving some spoons but I always lose momentum after a while when working on my own.
Does anyone else in South Cumbria or North Lancs want to help set up a small informal spoon carving group?
Potentially there’s a suitable venue in Windermere if you’re interested.
It would be a bring your own tools session & just enjoy the company of other enthusiasts & get inspired by seeing others work.
Just an idea at the moment.

Are there woodturner groups ? or men's shed type ones ?

Honestly, folks who work wood are welcoming to others who do so too :)

There's a Men In Sheds group at Caldbeck, near (ish) Carlisle and a mate of mine runs Brampton Woodworking club in...err... Brampton.

That's just two I know of, not specifically spoon carving but open to people making their own stuff.

Ok. So there is a spoon group meeting at the National Trust hub in Windermere one Tuesday evening a month from 5-8pm.
That doesn’t work for me in the winter, but I hope to join a few sessions in the summer. I’m posting it for others who may be interested.

Narional trust hub? That sounds familiar.
Stone boathouse with a cafe?
I worked on a sort of boathouse with cafe/clubhouse thing above it a few years ago.
I reckon the one I was working on was just a bit towards Bowness, from it. Less than a hundred yards though. Concrete pad with timber framed building on top, vertical timber cladding.

I put a load of timber decking in place there and some steel sort of cage sides for the bit underneath to make it secure for the rowing boats.

Wasnt my favourite job to be honest as there was some epoxy details on the concrete pad to metal flashing that were a bit of a fail and consequently water would run underneath it and could rot my work.
Mentioned it to the company contracts manager who just didn't want to know, he went onto have his own company then that went pop (mostly because of his attitude and gaslighting customers) so what comes around, goes around.

This one is an eco-build near Troutbeck Bridge on the Patterdale road. Oak framed building with an open-sided barn for outdoor stuff when it’s raining. So most of the time!

I think both are national trust places and there is an ethos to their newer places I thought.

I'm formerly north Lancashire now south Cumbria about 15 minutes from Kendal (if I ignore speed limits and push the old van a bit). I might be interested, just need to get some carving knives and work out how to get good wood for the spoons. Oh and learn how to do it safely. Carving is something I always fancied but found excuses not to. Perhaps the accountability of a group might be what will get me to do it. Windermere mid week is a bit too far though. Tuesdays is currently one of my on site days (might end up all 5 days on site this year too which from all week home working is a pisser). So I won't make a windermere spoon group that early.

If you are still up for a Kendal group then perhaps it is a good incentive for me to give it a go.
