Crocodile carved from a clothes peg, very rudimentary, but it kept me amused for ten minutes, unfortunately the little man on the top of the pencil ventured a bit too close and got noshed.

(But since when did you see wooden pegs of a quality worth carving?)

Try a local market for wooden pegs. Plastic ones snap in the frost anyway.
