Cow horn advice

Hi all

Just after advice please, I have a large highland cattle cow horn, I would like to polish the horn and so after advice how to undertake the task, what grit, etc.


Any advice welcome so that's in advance.

Ive never used cow horn but i would imagine its like any other horn. Progress from corse grit to very high grit wet and dry. And then a buffing wheel to get that high polish. Or some polishing compound and lots and lots and lots of elbow grease

You know the stuff that used to clean the cooker....Astonish paste, or the liquid used to clean the ceramic hobs. It makes a pretty decent job of it with some elbow grease

It buffs up well with carmine paste too, the stuff ladies use to polish nails without varnish.

Brasso and Tcut work too.

If the surface is very rough, and some are, then it's usual to scrape them smooth using something like the edge of a sharp knife or a razor blade to remove ridges and rough patches. Tricky to do without leaving ridges down the length though.
