We used to use them to light the wood stove - nice and long, protruded through the narrow opening...
I had some 30 cm for lighting a gas log fireplace. The length keeps your hand away from the gas flames which like to shoot out when you first turn them on.
It's the usual end of the BBQ season sell off that retailers have - ASDA in this case. If I recall correctly they were 37p (box of 52) and my thought was 'match and kindling - neat; buy it, try it' Quickly followed by 'Erm, matchcase?'

Yup, thought that myself - but they're metal 
I've a vague memory of a woof fire being something to do with kilns. Google had this to offer: http://www.potters.org/subject18729.htm and I've not yet found anything else. If I wasn't such a cynic/sceptic I'd think woof fire is potter patois

I think that it's become late enough for my mind to catch up and go 'Ah, of course, a safe distance fire lighter!'
"Woof fire" I like that. One of those things that has to be done for the effect from time to time. Now it has a name, my thanks to you, sir!
