We would have put a a rope around her in case she slipped or at least got her to use the paddle to hold her. We find it nearly always safer and easier to pull off boats and definitely people in rescue situations from downstream. Pulling someone from upstream means they often get pulled under. Pulling or retrieving from downstream means the current is helping you.
