Chemicals and water bottles

Anyone know if the recent worry about BPA chemicals leeching out of plastic water bottles relates to the NATO 58 or 90 pattern water bottles? I know many here in Canada have stopped stocking types of Nalgene bottles and many people are moving to metal water bottles.
I was thinking of picking up a crusader cooking kit with the NATO bottle but can't find any information about the chemical issue.

In my understanding the potential problems are related to polycarbonate bottles and the regular army bottles are usually not made out of polycarbonate (think they are polyetilene).

Nalgene pulled thier polycarb bottles (lexan) off the market due to the Bpa scare and have a new bottle.. I'm using Guyot stainless bottles and love them.

Are there any steel or aluminium water bottles available that fit the kidney shaped mug?

My dad had an aluminium one from the 50's but I have not seen it for years.

Glad now my Nalgene bottle was stolen.

aluminium??? for waterbottles or cooking equipment-YUK!!! not for me,thanks, since i had the "privilege"to "enjoy" :yuck: meals out of army- messtins made from cheapest aluminium(only difference to my (inherited) grandfathersWWII- messtin was the colour...), this material is banished from my kitchen!!! and how do you know that aluminium-bottles do'nt bring you (other) healthproblems as well?
army-styly canteens are usually made from HD-PE, which should be not "sufer"from the problem mentioned above.
if you 're really keen on aluminium for watercanteens- try to find an armyshop which sells kraut army equipment- they should be still using them(or did at least until recently).

I only use my wide-mouth Nalgene for depositing recycled Spicy rum, so if i consumed anything from it, Bpa poisoning would be the last thing i'd be worrying about. Mind you, it may take the taste away, just have to get around the smell issue! :yuck:

Hi, just a small point that might be interesting. This sounds like what statisticians call 'spurious correlation'. Just because there is a mathematical relationship between the chemical and illnesses doesnt mean that one is necessarily caused by the other. IMHO it might well be more to do with what is in the packaging (ie processed gunk) and the lifestyle of those that eat lots of processed foods, rather than the packaging itself...better to stay out of the centre aisles of supermarkets?

I've a Vietnam era plastic canteen that came with the same type of mug (US Army), to old to be polycarbon I think, so look out for one of those. The cooker support for the mug is also better than the Crusader setup IMHO
