Hi,

Does anyone know where I can get a cheap thermarest type sleeping mat? I bought my hammock earlier in the year and have experimented a couple of times sleeping with the thermarest inside. This is perfectly comfy, however I find the standard thermarest tends to stretch out the bottom of my sleeping bag where it starts to taper making it feel a bit constricted. I know thermarest sell a lightweight tapered mat, but, well, I'm a bit brasic at the mo and am looking for a cheap alternative.

Thanks,

Mat

Try one of the 'Airic' range from Alpkit. I've a Fat Airic and a standard one, and think they're excellent for the price. A 'Wee Airic' might do the job in your hammock (though a reindeer skin would probably do better :D)

Any use ? They do a full size version which is cheap at the moment too.

When I was looking (I bought the second one above), this was the cheapest place I found for a prolite 4, not sure how it compares to other places for 3/4 lengths and prolite 3.

HTH. :)

Mat are you sleeping with the Thermarest 'inside' the sleeping bag? Try placing it between the bag and hammock, this will give you more room in the bag.

As Wolfman says, use the mat between your dossbag and hammock, not actually in the bag itself.

I use a 3/4 length Highlander copy of the thermarest, it cost me 20 quid and comes with a repair kit. It's perfect for what I want it for which is to use in my hennessy when I'm not carrying my reindeer skin :D

Cheers,

Bam. :D

best and cheapest option by a mile is the ones decathlon sell..

dunno if there is one near you but they are cheap and damn good quality!

When I first got my hammock I tried sleeping with the mat under my sleeping bag. This was ok but I found that I kept rolling off it during the night (I must be a fidget a**e during the night!) and I ended up wil cold spots.

After reading some posts on here, the suggestion seemed to be to sleep with the mat inside the sleeping bag. I found this works much better, although is not quite as comfy sleeping with your skin next to the Thermarest as it is next to the sleeping bag. I do find though, that my basic model Thermarest does flatten out the sleeping bag when it starts to taper at the end, hence my quest for a second (and hopefully cheaper) one that tapers.

I'm another Alpkit fan. I got mine in April, and it's received a steady stream of abuse since then. It's lasted longer than any of the other thermarests I've tried to date, and I'm very impressed - especially at that price!

I use a millets "Storm Shield" jobby a the moment seems to do the job - I wasn't too keen with it against the skin so brought a cheapy cheap cotton sleeping bag liner that i found on sale.
