Hi,

Lidl in Rep of Ireland and Northern Ireland are selling green tarps as one of their specials this week. They are 3mx2m, have ten metal eyelets, weigh 505gm, and are waterproof. I can get it down to a 30cm roll that fits in my hand, and I don't have big hands! So it's not as sexy as an Aussie hootchie, but at just EUR3.97 or STG 1.99, I can live with it. If you're thinking of trying tarp shelter building, but don't want to spend a bunch, this is one way to go about it.

I've also checked the lidl.co.uk site, but unfortunately our friends in Britain don't have the same offer available to them at the moment :?: . but you could check out their cheap folding saw available next week (and it's not available in NI or ROI!) :

Are they really made of genuine tarpaulin? Or is it some other material?

Just kidding, sort of. What the heck kind of lame description is that? What's the thing made of?

Bear

Bear,
it's a kind of woven plastic stuff :?: . Anyway, I had a couple of these on my woodpile for two years, and apart from some points where they got scuffed against the logs, they stayed watertight. You'll get wear along fold lines too. But Lidl run these things on a yearly basis and the same stuff comes around again: if it gets badly worn, just buy another one next yr!

Hello everybody! This forum is really a nice place!

I'm using the same type of tarp for about a year now, for shelter, for rainfly, for undertarp, and for some other chores. It is waterproof, strong and cheap. The only problem is (as PC2K mentioned) the sound it gives when the wind is blowing. You can crinkle (this is the right word?) it at the shop, and decide that you can live with it, or not.
My other special problem with this size of tarp is the cleaning/drying after a nice muddy weekend. Washing it in the bathroom is one of the so many jobs that require a minimum of three hands, and it occupies the bigger half of my living room when it dries.

Sorry for my English

Bye,

Simca

Welcome to the board Simca. Your english is fine by the way and I know what you mean about that tarp noise when the wind gets up :biggthump

I picked up one of the saws in my local Lidl today just to see what it was like. It actually cost £2.99 rather than the advertised £3.99 so not a major problem if it is bin-fodder!

First impressions are that it is “OK” for £3. It has a large handle with a three stage locking mechanism. It locks closed, open and half way between the two which I assume is to stop you closing it on your fingers. There is some blade wobble but the handle is comfortable in use. I Have a Fiskars' retractable saw that I usually carry and comparing the two the Lidl one is a bit flimsy. The blades are similar in actual cutting length but the Fiskar model has longer teeth. On a 3” log the Fiskars' was less work and faster but the Lidl unit did complete the cut with out any real difficulty. In the back-pack the Lidl does take up nearly twice the space of my Fiskar.

It’s not the best saw in the world but for a weekend out is looks fine.
