Got an old French one from biker at the Moot

I intend taking off all the old plastic bits and replacing them with neat leather fittings with brass buckles.

(When I can afford such an investment...)

But a previous owner has written their name in permement marker on it

Any way to get this off?

Or do I just redye? (its dark sandy)

and has it been proofed with anything?

I used to collect webbing. What generally worked for me is methylated spirit applied carefully with a toothbrush - on canvas/webbing, don't scrub too hard. Flex the fabric against itself. Blot with tissue. Repeat. At the end, wash the area with washing up liquid. Air dry.

This COULD leave a light patch, that's always a risk. You could go through the motions in an inconspicuous area as a dry run to test. If it does leave a patch and if you don't mind camouflage, you could (ironically) cam up the rucksack to hide the patch...

It'd be helpful to see a pic of the item.
